UNICEF gathered the views of more than 10,000 U-Reporters in support of the 30th anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth (WPAY) and the #YouthLead Dialogues promoted by the UN Youth Office. Here’s what young people had to say. 

What matters most to young people today? 

When asked about the most important issues affecting them, young people under 24 highlighted: 

The data revealed gender differences: young men were more likely to prioritize employment (36%) and education (29%), while young women highlighted health and mental health (18%) at more than twice the rate of males (8%). 

What holds young people back? 

Young people also spoke about the barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential. The top challenges were: 

Conflict and political instability (9%) ranked almost as high as health and mental health, showing the broader challenges many young people face.  

A vision for the future 

When asked to describe a future without barriers in three words, U-Reporters highlighted being empowered, inclusive, and limitless, with strong emphasis on employment and education as key enablers. 

To get closer to that future, many stressed the importance of providing more opportunities for education, creating decent jobs, and making sure mental health services are accessible. As one young person shared: 

“We need opportunities to learn and work, so that our potential is not wasted.” 

Another wrote: 

“Take mental health seriously—it is as important as education and work.” 

What’s happening with these results? 

The results of this U-Report poll were included in the UN Youth Office’s official summary report and presented during the WPAY High-Level Event at the UN General Assembly in New York (UNGA).  Results will also inform ongoing youth-led dialogues, ensuring young people’s voices continue to shape decisions that affect their lives.
